Today Engineers Yukon recognizes the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women. Please join us in a moment of silence as we recognize the lives of the 14 young women we lost 31 years ago at Ecole Polytechnique in Montréal by watching this video below. This act of violent misogyny shook our country and led Parliament to designate December 6 as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women.

As we mourn their loss and honour their memory, Engineers Yukon reaffirms our commitment to fight the hatred that led to this tragedy, and the misogyny that still exists today. The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women is about remembering those who have experienced gender-based violence and those who we have lost to it; it is also a time to take action. Working together we can help prevent gender-based violence by remembering and learning from our past, listening to survivors, and speaking up against harmful behaviour.
There is no tolerance for gender-based violence in our profession. We are working in partnership with Engineers Canada to increase the representation of women within engineering through the 30 by 30 initiative. This initiative has a goal of raising the percentage of newly licensed engineers who are women to 30 per cent by the year 2030. Thirty per cent is universally held as the tipping point for sustainable change—reaching 30 by 30 will help drive the shift in the overall membership of the engineering profession as more and more women continue to enter the profession.
December 6 falls within the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. Add your voice to the conversation between November 25 and December 10 and share the ways you are part of the solution to end gender-based violence using the hashtag #16Days.
