Yukon Engineering Bonanza
The Engineers Yukon's Outreach Committee is expanding our signature annual event, the Bridge Building competition, to be bigger, better, and more inclusive of other engineering disciplines. The new Engineering Bonanza aims to have the bridge building contest as a centerpiece with additional booths set up by industry to showcase their disciplines (i.e. Civil, Mechanical, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, etc.). The Event will be a day of interactive activities, prizes, and learning about all engineers have to offer. It will be open to the public and is taking place April 27th, 2024. We're pleased to announce that we have booked the ATCO Arena at the Canada Games Centre to host this event.
The Bridge Building competition can be done individually or in teams. Students learn engineering process, the fundamentals of structures and the engineering design process. Engineers Yukon will provide the rules (linked below!), guidance (such as presentations that can be used in the classroom, see the teacher resources below), sticks and construction materials necessary for teams to build bridges, which will then be tested to destruction in dramatic fashion. The bridges with the best strength to weight ratio win and have their names added to the trophy for each age bracket, although certificates for all entrants will be provided by Engineers Yukon.
Drop off of complete bridges will be April 26th after 4pm at the Canada Games Centre, in front of the ATCO Arena for weigh-in prior to the event. If this time does not work, please reach out to outreach@engineersyukon.ca to make alternate arrangements.
Event Testing Schedule for Saturday April 27:
- 10am to 12pm: Grade 3 to 5
- 12pm to 2pm: Grades 6-7
- 2pm to 4pm: Grades 8-12
If students are present when their bridge is tested, they can collect their bridge (or what's left!) should they want to, otherwise the bridges will be disposed of following the event.
For this event, the Engineers Yukon Outreach Committee is seeking sponsors and exhibitors to help make the Bonanza a success.
Please view the attached letter for more information regarding the event, and the sponsorship and exhibition opportunities. The online sponsorship form can be completed through this link.
We are seeking volunteers for setup, tear-down, and bridge testing. This would be a great opportunity for senior students to get some volunteer hours and additional one on one time with our engineers! If you're an engineer, this is a great chance to meet the aspiring youth of our Territory. Please consider volunteering, these events can't be run without you.
